This is a moment that demands an aggressive, forceful response from Congress. But for too long, Congress has punted its Constitutional power and given the president unlimited authority to wage war.

It’s long past time to repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which has been used to justify endless wars, waged without the consent of Congress. It was problematic even when the president was Barack Obama. When the president is Donald Trump, it’s a disaster.

Too many of our political leaders have supported reckless forever wars. The House Foreign Affairs Committee should now do everything in its power to stop another war from occurring.

My opponent, Representative Eliot Engel, voted against President Obama’s Iran deal.

This past June, he said on CNN he didn’t want to tie Trump’s hands when it came to strikes against Iran.

In July, Engel responded to pressure from our communities and progressive voices by joining Representative Ro Khanna in calling for the prohibition of funding for offensive military force against Iran without prior congressional authorization.

Now, Engel has an opportunity to back his words with action.

I call on the Congressman to quickly move this legislation out of the House Foreign Affairs committee and to a vote on the House floor this week, and you should call him too. Tell him to move Representative Khanna's legislation through the Foreign Affairs committee and onto a vote on the House floor this week in whatever way by text, call, or fax.
