Only one year ago Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the first BNC candidate to be sworn into Congress. Against all odds, she unseated the 4th most powerful Democrat in the House. She did this through hard work, grassroots organizing and standing for fierce progressive values. 

AOC quickly became a symbol of a future generation of political leaders and what is possible with a Brand New Congress--one that actually puts people above party. 

Alex went to work immediately, using her platform every day to speak for the people--all people. We can’t list all she’s accomplished, but we are celebrating a few of her achievements today. 

Pushing progressive ideas and real legislation:

Since her swearing-in as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress in American history, she has held to her values as a Brand New Congress candidate by unapologetically advancing progressive policies. In a single year, AOC has:
 

• Introduced the Green New Deal Resolution just one month after swearing-in
• Partnered with Bernie on the Loan Shark Prevention Act to cap interest rates at 15%
• Co-sponsored a bill to eliminate federal and private student loan debt
• Fought for housing reform and to make housing a human right
• Called for a 70% tax rate starting at the $10 millionth dollar earned 
• Offered to draft a bipartisan bill to prevent lawmakers from becoming lobbyists
• Rallied for money for Puerto Rico and continued disaster relief
• Supported Medicare for All
• Supported workers’ rights expansions, protections of unions and labor empowerment
• Has taken on corporate corruption from Amazon; to privatized prisons; to big pharma
• Pays her interns $15 an hr. and her entry-level staffers $52,000
• Has fought against interventionist wars
• Stood up against the sweeping Department of Homeland Security funding bill (voted on by most Democrats) which allocated millions of dollars to ICE and CBP with no language included to end privatized prisons or address any kind of oversight 
• Stood up in favor of reigning in Executive Powers in times of war by supporting the repeal of the AUMF

And since being elected to Congress, AOC hasn’t missed a single vote! That is true representation for the people, by the people! 

This is only a shortlist of her accomplishments. We’ve seen the power of one, but to get legislation passed, Alex needs more regular-working allies on the Hill. Even $5 today would help Brand New Congress elect more AOCs in 2020.

Inspiring a new generation of Congressional candidates:

Not only has AOC taken bold stances to preserve the progressive policies she promised to uphold, but she has also inspired a new generation of Congressional candidates to run across the country.  

When BNC launched in 2016 called for our supporters to nominate people in your districts and states that YOU believed would be a strong representation. People who are doing the hard work on the ground every day for their communities. We talked to hundreds of people across the country. At that time, running an insurgent grassroots campaign on zero PAC dollars seemed like a pipe dream to so many. It was outside of the norm. 

In 2019, we saw a tremendous change that was inspired in part by AOC’s historic win. People across the country saw that it IS possible to challenge the status quo and WIN. Hundreds of regular-working people took up the call to run for office, and we talked to hundreds of candidates who were already mounting true progressive challenges to incumbents that have ignored their constituencies for far too long. 

We saw a movement grow and hope spring up from state to state. The 2020 election year has the potential to change the face of our Congress, and AOC’s resolve, dedication, and hard work have inspired a blossoming of the progressive movement.
