Happy 2020, John! I hope everyone’s year is off to a good start. I am very happy to report that thanks to your support, we’ve hit our end-of-year goal for 2019 and are ready to start the New Year strong.
Despite a lot of challenges, we had some truly major victories in 2019.
We successfully stood up for ordinary Americans by passing the FAIR Act in the House. This legislation, which I have sponsored every session since I have been in Congress, protects consumers and workers by prohibiting businesses and employers from strong-arming workers and employees into forced arbitration. Forced arbitration is a privatized for-profit dispute resolution process that almost always favors the business or employer at the expense of the little guy, who is in a better position when there is an option to go through the courts.
A comprehensive 3000-word article from Vox on the bill applauded it as a “groundbreaking bill that would restore rights to millions” and the hard effort it took to pass, saying: “Pushing it through the House was a feat in its own right. Members of Congress have been trying for years to outlaw forced arbitration in various scenarios [...] none have ever gotten through the House.”
We also led the charge on holding Donald Trump accountable. I was the first member of the Georgia delegation to call for impeachment hearings, and some of my comments got so much positive attention that NowThis used them as inspiration for a short viral video on the civil rights case for impeaching Donald Trump.
Speaking of the impeachment hearings, progressive media site “Crooks and Liars” put a spotlight on my rebuttal to Congressman Matt Gaetz for their “Good Guy Award.” This is yet another example of our work leading the way in countering false and misleading narratives from Trump and his allies.
And there’s so much more we did in 2019: from fighting the militarization of police, to protecting our environment from coal ash, to advocating for communities being overrun by huge conglomerates & billionaire bigshots who are using the Trump tax cuts to push poor and middle-class Americans out of their historical neighborhoods.
Now it’s time to look forward to 2020, but I can’t do it without you, John.
All the progress we made in 2019, and everything we are going to accomplish in 2020 relies on a strong grassroots movement made up of everyday Georgians and Americans like you, John. And because this is a major election year, we are going to need all hands on deck to make sure Georgia Democrats can fight for our issues while also winning elections. That’s why I’m asking you to consider making a grassroots donation to my campaign so we can start 2020 strong and keep fighting for our priorities. Will you help?
Thanks for everything, and talk soon.
-- Hank
