The Democrats are trying to pass their “Respect for Marriage Act” (RFMA) which would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that declared marriage to be between one man and one woman.
This Act however, would be redundant and have no effect on marriage in America because of the Supreme Court’s Obergfell and Windsor decisions which already effectively repealed the DOMA law.
Who this bill would really affect are religious institutions and individuals who believe marriage only exists between one man and one woman. Institutions like religiously affiliated schools, charities, adoption centers, non-profits, businesses etc… would be subject to lawsuits and the revocation of tax status for simply disagreeing with any marriage other than the conjugal marriage between a man and a woman.
To help set the record straight on what exactly is in this bill, Roger Severiono of The Heritage Foundation breaks down 7 myths surrounding what would happen if it passes.
