Dear John, Last week I told you about my patient who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Had we met a few years earlier, we could have made the necessary changes to reroute her wellness journey. Prevention is key. My advice to you is if you notice signs of mental fogging, trouble focusing, forgetting names... it's time to be proactive. Start practicing our brain-famous Kirtan Kriya meditation. Consider improving your diet and exercising consistently. Be an active part of a network and give back to your community. Giving is actually an important part of brain health. Studies have shown that giving triggers the brain’s dopamine-rich reward system. When you give, you secrete “feel good” chemicals in your brain, such as serotonin (a mood-mediating chemical), dopamine (a feel-good chemical), and oxytocin (compassion and bonding chemical). Studies also show that when people donate to charity, the portion of the brain responsible for feelings of reward is triggered. The brain releases feel-good chemicals, spurring you to perform more kind acts. So in the spirit of giving, we have a present for you! We kindly ask that you remember us in your Giving Tuesday gifts. $100, $250, $500, or any amount you give will be a boon for preventing Alzheimer’s, keeping memories alive, and aging with grace. We all yearn for the day when Alzheimer’s can no longer rob us the way it has robbed so many. I will be donating in honor of my patient, Julia. You can also donate In Memory of a loved one. Thank you for your generous support. Yours in Brain Health, Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. President / Medical Director Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation (ARPF) www.alzheimersprevention.org
