Dear Friends of Critical Resistance,

This week is as significant a time as ever to reflect on how the prison industrial complex (PIC) is deployed on behalf of the US colonial project, and in turn uplift the many examples of Indigenous resistance to it.

Stencil image of a person's silhouette with a collage of Indigenous resistance inside of blocking pipelines and stopping land extraction. Three bird fly across the top and sides. Text that says: "L'eau Est La Vie From Standing Rock to the Swamp"

We at Critical Resistance (CR) are continuously inspired by the steadfastness of multi-generational Indigenous resistance waged globally. As the current threat to the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) ([link removed]) is being stricken down in the Supreme Court, we call attention to Indigenous resistance across North America, from members of the Navajo nation defending the ICWA, to the American Indian Movement in DC recently completing a walk for justice to support long held political prisoner Leonard Peltier, and to Saskatchewan, a province in Canada that has between 75 to 80% Indigenous people caged – where hunger strikes have recently broken out in Pine Ridge Correctional Centre led by Faith Eagle in response to conditions inside.

Looking internationally, we see the continuation of over a year of mobilization by Indigenous peoples in South and Central America resisting the intensification of violence and militarization in their territories that is forcing many to migrate in order to survive. From Amazonia to Quito marches and caravans are bringing Indigenous claims to the right of their land and community self-determination into attention.

As Indigenous nations around the world fight against colonialism, for a self determined future for themselves and the planet, CR works to shrink the power of the PIC locally in the US, with an eye toward global impacts of weakening its ability to cage and control people. We understand our work to end ICE contracts in NY via our work on Dignity Not Detention legislation as part of the Abolish ICE NY/NJ coalition, and our work to close 10 prisons in CA by 2025 with Californians United for a Responsible Budget as concrete solidarity with Indigenous communities across continents.
