Friend —

Anyone who has stepped foot inside a grocery store or filled up a tank of gas in the past year knows that prices are going up. The rising cost of living can be difficult, even painful, in wealthier countries like the United States. But for people in regions already facing conflict, natural disasters, or other crises without the infrastructure to adapt to these events, the results can be catastrophic.

Afghanistan is one of those places.

Since the shift in power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the country has experienced near economic collapse and a worsening humanitarian crisis. If the current conditions continue, hunger could kill more people than the last 20 years of war, many of them being children.

With your support, the IRC is doing everything we can to avoid that future.

Finding employment that will cover expenses is a huge challenge in Afghanistan right now. Many people in Afghanistan have become disabled during the war. Additionally, women and and even children who have lost family members have been forced to take on a breadwinning role.

Cash assistance is one of our most effective tools to help in these cases — and it's giving Afghans like Amir and Zahra a chance to take control of their future.

Amir is the father of a big family. He's unable to find work and prices have risen rapidly so his family struggles to afford necessities like food, oil, blankets and clothes.

"Today the price for oil is 2,500 [Afghanis], but the next day it reaches to 3,000. One gets shocked seeing this," Amir said. "We are just looking to God's mercy." Amir plans to buy staples like bread and other food with the assistance he received from the IRC.

Zahra is a widow with three children. One of her daughters is paralyzed from the waist down and experiences extreme pain.

Before cash assistance from the IRC, Zahra's family had very little. Zahra even had to borrow shoes from a neighbor to meet with the IRC team.

With assistance from the IRC, Zahra is buying medicine to help manage her daughter's condition as well as rice and other necessities.

Nobody knows more about what it takes to survive and rebuild in a crisis zone than the people who live there. That's why direct cash assistance is such an important resource, and why the IRC is committed to working closely with local communities in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Somalia.

Your support is helping the IRC make a significant impact as rising prices put even more pressure on families around the world. Thank you so much for doing your part.
