Feeling Grateful

Dear John,

The world is a beautiful and biodiverse place, filled with natural wonders. Scientists believe there are 8.7 million species of plants and animals in existence. This biodiversity is the foundation of vital ecosystems that provide us with fresh water, clean air, food security, and medicine…and it hangs in delicate balance.

Without keystone species like elephants, lions, and sharks, who are essential to establishing and maintaining their ecosystems, entire food webs could collapse.

Without “forest guardians” like pangolins, who use their claws to excavate ant and termite nests for food, ecosystems would be overrun with insects that could destroy crops and soil health.

Without coastal ecosystems like mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes, which sequester more carbon per hectare than any other habitat on the planet, carbon in the atmosphere would skyrocket.
