A round-up of news and ways to take action from this November.

Dear John

I want to say a huge thank you for all your support, particularly over the past few months.

Lots of us are feeling the effects as temperatures drop and energy bills rise here in the UK. With your help, we’re hard at work pressuring the government for immediate action on the climate and energy crises.

Our short film below lays out how we can pull together to make a difference. Make sure to give it a watch.

And in case it’s helpful to you now, we’ve pulled together 50 of the best energy saving tips you can act on right away. I really hope these can help you save some money on gas and electricity and make your home more energy efficient.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO DEAL WITH THE ENERGY CRISIS?
[link removed]
As it gets colder, some areas of the UK are being hit harder than others by the energy crisis. Like Bradford – one of the places we identified as being worst affected by soaring bills.

Watch our short film to hear from people in Bradford struggling with the rising cost of living and those working to help support locals. And the campaigners presenting solutions to the energy crisis.

And if you haven't already, don’t forget tosign our petition ([link removed]) calling for bold action to keep the UK warm this winter and beyond.

WHAT DOES THE PUBLIC ORDER BILL MEAN FOR YOU?
You could soon get arrested for a heap of new reasons, as a result of the government's draconian new Public Order Bill. Including all but one of these. But which one did we make up?

CAN CORPORATIONS REALLY SUE COUNTRIES FOR CLIMATE ACTION?
[link removed]
Yes, in the UK they can – while we're still part of the Energy Charter Treaty. It's an agreement that makes it possible for companies to sue governments when climate action gets in the way of their profits.

But maybe not for much longer. People across Europe – including hundreds of thousands of Friends of the Earth supporters – spoke out against the treaty.

And last Friday it became clear that the ECT is nearing the end of its days. With countries includingFrance, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany refusing to support a treaty ([link removed]) which protects polluting fossil fuel giants. The final decision on its future will happen next spring – I'll have more on this then.

Exploitation from fossil fuel companies was a hot topic at last week’s climate summit. It was a very mixed bag of outcomes from the talks in Egypt. And you can read our COP27 response here ([link removed]) .
HOW WE'RE FIGHTING A MOZAMBIQUE GAS MEGA PROJECT IN COURT
[link removed]

You might remember that last December Friends of the Earth took the UK government to court over its decision to fund a dirty gas project in Mozambique.

Our case ended in legal limbo. One judge ruled in our favour and the other against, forcing the case to be dismissed. On 6 December we’re back in court to try to overturn the dismissal. And end the UK government’s support for gas in Mozambique.

We believe that gas expansion in Africa is bad for people and planet. And you can read more about why in Friends of the Earth Africa’s latest report.

HOW A PHILIPPINE COMMUNITY IS POWERING HOMES WITH SOLAR

[link removed]

This video was produced by the Legal Rights and Natural Resources Centre.

All over the world, local communities are drawing on renewable energy sources to power their homes. Take the T’boli-Manobo indigenous community on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

Working closely with Friends of the Earth Philippines, this March the village of Ned in South Cotabato went from having no electricity to having their own solar system, powering at least 46 homes. Read on to find out how it happened – and why an energy system owned by people is such a victory.

WE'RE CHALLENGING A NORTHERN IRELAND GAS STORAGE PROJECT
[link removed]
As lots of you know, Northern Ireland’s beautiful Larne Lough is threatened by a massive fossil fuel infrastructure project ([link removed]) *. Under these plans, 7 vast gas storage caverns will be hollowed out beneath the seabed.

So alongside local campaigning group No Gas Caverns, we’re fighting back. By taking legal action against the government over its flawed decision to let the plans go ahead.

And on 16 January, we’re heading to court. Thanks so much if you’ve already chipped in. And if you’d like to go even further to support our legal case, you can donate to our friends at No Gas Caverns. ([link removed])
