John,

We all know a street that is unnecessarily wide, right? It's annoying because the traffic is fast, it's difficult to cross and just generally unsafe. What you might not appreciate is how expensive that extra foot is, how the costs for it continue to spiral year after year.

Welcome back to Strong Towns! To kick off 2020, I wrote an article to describe the cost of that extra foot. Read it, then pass it along to your budget-conscious friend so they can join you and me in advocating for building better streets and stronger towns.

But that's not the most exciting thing I want to share with you today. This is the day we start The Official Strong Towns Book Club! We've piled lots of content, discussion opportunities, and more into a section of our community site (community.strongtowns.org) and now we're making it available to you. I'm going to be there answering questions and doing video Q&A. If you enjoyed my book Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity and want to chat with others about it, and how it applies to your place, this is the book club you want to be in.

And if you haven't read the Strong Towns book yet, what are you waiting for? The feedback has been amazing, and there's a new review coming out this month in Reason Magazine. If your local book store or library doesn't have it, here are some other options.

Final word: Over our holiday break, Kea Wilson (who normally writes these emails) left us to pursue other work. We're happy for her and the opportunity, but obviously we now have some empty shoes here. In the next few days, we're going to be announcing some opportunities to join the Strong Towns Team. If you've wanted to be part of the exciting work we do here, this may be your opportunity. (Please don't send resumes -- that's not how we roll. We'll make a big announcement and, if you're getting these emails, you won't miss it.)

Happy New Year, everyone! Let's make 2020 the strongest year ever for our cities, towns and neighborhoods.
