Folks, I’m writing to you overjoyed. Congress is on the cusp of sending the Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA) to President Biden's desk.
This act is a huge step forward for LGBTQ+ individuals’ right to marry in our country. The RFMA will also protect interracial marriages in the United States, too.
If you’re thinking, “I can’t believe this legislation is needed in 2022” – I agree with you. It’s preposterous that the LGBTQ+ community still undergoes discrimination from far-right bigots who want to create a divided society.
But, the simple fact of the matter is that the RFMA is needed now more than ever. In his dissenting opinion which overturned Roe v. Wade, Clarence Thomas indicated his desire to revisit the Court’s ruling on Obergefell v. Hodges which guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry.
I was disgusted when I first heard this. Same-sex marriage has been the law of the land and exists to uphold the founding purpose of our country: to be a place where equality above all else reigns supreme.
Now, as the signing of the RFMA is all but certain, same-sex marriages across the country will finally be recognized by the federal government.
This is a huge step in the right direction but the reality is that there’s still more work to be done to safeguard the rights and protections of LGBTQ+ individuals.
I’m ready to get to work to make it happen but we’re now up against a radical GOP House majority which makes the hill we’ll have to climb all the more steep. Can I count on your help to get it done?
If so, I’m asking you to please chip in as much as you can so I can continue to fight for the LGBTQ+ community in Congress. I won’t rest until our law provides equal protections and rights for all.
Let’s keep up the good fight.
In solidarity,
Susie Lee
