Friends,

Like many of you, I’m still processing the shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs. And last night's shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia underscores the dire gun problem we have in our country. My thoughts are with all those who lost loved ones, and with the many people who were injured during these horrific attacks.

LGBTQ+ clubs are supposed to be safe and affirming places for members of our community who experience discrimination elsewhere. That makes the violence we saw at the club in Colorado Springs especially heartbreaking and disturbing.

Horrible acts like this are spurred on by dangerous rhetoric aimed at LGBTQ+ Americans. And hateful individuals are emboldened when they hear discrimination coming from politicians and leaders who condemn those who are different from them. Recently, we’ve seen a rise in attacks directed at the trans community. That toxic rhetoric needs to stop.

We also have to address the easy access to firearms that enable mass shooters to take out their hatred on others. We have to keep fighting to ensure that my bill reinstating the Assault Weapons Ban passes the Senate and is signed into law, so that violent individuals cannot so easily shatter so many lives in mere minutes.

Every single person — regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity — is entitled to respect, dignity, and the ability to live their lives free from discrimination and hate. As a nation, we need to do better.

My heart is with all of those whose lives were taken or forever upended in these senseless acts of violence. Leaders have a responsibility to keep people safe, and I sincerely hope we can work together to stop the hate-filled rhetoric, get weapons of war off the streets, and send a message to all LGBTQ+ people that they are valued and affirmed.
