Hot off the presses, it’s NIRH’s 2019 Year in Review, Gaining Ground: Proactive Reproductive Health and Rights Legislation in the States! Our year-end report is an in-depth review of the many ways in which states pushed forward a proactive agenda for reproductive freedom over the course of 2019.

As many anti-abortion state legislatures and a hostile Trump-Pence administration continued to attack reproductive rights and abortion access in 2019, dozens of states around the country stepped up to advance the full spectrum of reproductive health care, including access to abortion, maternal health care, and contraception through hundreds of pieces of legislation — introducing nearly one thousand (!) proactive bills, and passing a record 147, more than in any previous year!

The great progress of 2019 — even in the face of draconian bans and restrictions — is the result of activists, advocates, and policymakers fighting tirelessly for reproductive freedom, and underscores the importance and effectiveness of our focus on state and local strategies. NIRH is proud to work to pass proactive legislation in the states — and the successes of 2019 prove the effectiveness of our strategy. 

As we kick off 2020, NIRH and our partners in states across the country are fueled by this momentum to push forward an even bolder agenda to protect and advance reproductive health, rights, and justice.
