John, in case you missed it, President Biden recently announced his plan to pardon all citizens with federal charges for marijuana possession.
That’s a huge step forward into correcting the systemic and racial injustices that have been caused by the war on drugs and criminalization of marijuana. But it’s only the beginning in the fight for decriminalization, justice, and equity. And it leaves so many behind.
It’s time for President Biden to be bolder and include everyone regardless of immigration status. That means extending that grace to undocumented people & families who have been separated and criminalized over simple possession. No one should be incarcerated and separated from their families.
Marijuana justice is critically tied to the foundations of our democracy. To have a truly equal justice system there shouldn’t be such huge disparities between undocumented folks when it comes to marijuana-based arrest and incarceration.
We’re fighting for a better planet AND a better world and that means we need to combat marijuana-based injustice head on.
Undocumented people should not be detained or deported over a possession of marijuana charge — period.
