This is personal for me

Hi Friend,

Last autumn, my life was changed by one piece of mail. Inside the envelope was a green card with my name on it — and a brochure that said “Welcome to the United States,” the country I’d already called home for 21 years. As I celebrated Thanksgiving with my family and friends, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. There are so many people who fought alongside me and for that I give thanks for my community, who l shared in my joy despite many of their own statuses remaining uncertain.

This year, my gratitude is more bittersweet, because hundreds of thousands of other individuals found their lives thrown into uncertainty and fear again by the Fifth Circuit’s devastating decision that the DACA program is unlawful.

I’ve made it my life’s work to change the system so other families and fellow immigrants don’t have to go through the same thing, but countless individuals just like me still haven’t been granted any resolution.

Before DACA, I spent my childhood years fearing deportation. I spent my school-age years fighting for change while living with the uncertainty about the consequences of my status.

For the past two decades, my life was spent in survival mode — knowing that DACA could collapse at any moment. And now, with the Fifth Circuit’s decision, the collapse of the entire DACA program has accelerated. So even though many of us are on a holiday break, this can’t wait.

Sharing stories just like mine is one of the most effective ways to tell Congress that time is up: it’s time to pass legislative protections for DACA recipients and Dreamers before the end of 2022. [link removed]

Every day, nearly 600,000 DACA recipients that depend on DACA are living in immediate fear that they’ll lose their work authorization, dreading countless catastrophic changes to their lives if they’re blocked from renewing their DACA status, and so much more. This week, as we all give thanks for our families, jobs, and homes, theirs all remain in jeopardy.

I am determined to ensure Congress provides permanent protections for DACA recipients and Dreamers before the end of the year. We need everyone to join in.
