Republicans in Ohio are testing how far they can erode democracy.
Ohio Republicans recently announced a proposal to require that citizen-led ballot initiatives gain a supermajority of 60% of the vote to pass, instead of the current simple majority. This is a blatant attempt to weaken public accountability at the polls.
The attack on democracy isn’t surprising -- it takes aim at the very tool that Ohioans used to reform redistricting a few years ago. But it is deeply concerning.
We need to hold elected officials accountable when they try to change the rules in their favor. Donate to All On The Line to help us empower voters. [[link removed]]
This announcement from Secretary of State LaRose and State Representative Stewart -- coming days after a similar ballot initiative was defeated by voters in Arkansas -- seems to indicate a new conservative strategy against citizen-led reforms efforts. We cannot let them continue to push this strategy across the country.
Republicans in Ohio took advantage of a loophole in accountability when they forced Ohio voters to use gerrymandered maps in the midterm election. Now they are expanding their attacks on voting rights and finding new ways to disempower voters. If this proposed change on ballot initiatives goes into effect, voters will face a much harder task in passing redistricting reforms that fix the accountability loophole.
We cannot let attacks like this go unchecked. Chip in $5 to fund our democracy protection work in states like Ohio. [[link removed]]
