Dear Subscriber,

InSight Crime is pleased to announce the release of its latest investigation: “Cocaine Brokers: The ‘Ndrangheta in South America.”

This three-part investigation dives into how the most powerful Italian Mafia group, the ‘Ndrangheta, has capitalized on South America’s cocaine boom to secure its position as a crucial player in the international drug trade.
From the southern Italian region of Calabria, the ’Ndrangheta has created a colossal, multibillion-dollar enterprise with a presence that spans the globe. But contrary to popular belief, the ’Ndrangheta is not a single organization. And clans trafficking cocaine under the ’Ndrangheta name operate largely independently.

In this three-part series, InSight Crime explores the full role that the ‘Ndrangheta clans have carved out for themselves in South America’s cocaine trade:

Dockworkers, drivers, customs officials, and more collaborate to ensure the drugs pass through safely.

Through their relationship, the ‘Ndrangheta created a lucrative partnership with the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC), a brutal paramilitary group who drove the cocaine supply chain. Even after the AUC lay down their arms, their successors, the Urabeños, have continued to deal with the ‘Ndrangheta to this day.

The third chapter reveals the ‘Ndrangheta’s modus operandi through the story of Rocco Morabito, a cocaine trafficker and Italy’s second-most wanted man until his 2021 arrest in a Brazilian beachside hotel. Morabito was one of the most important ‘Ndrangheta cocaine brokers in South America, connecting supply and demand like few others could. His story illustrates the independent but interconnected nature of the clans’ involvement in the drug trade.
