This Thanksgiving, let’s honor Indigenous people by joining the fight for Indigenous sovereignty.

In violation of federal treaties, Indigenous sacred sites on federal land have been threatened by harmful development projects like pipelines, mining activities, and resource extraction—all without the consent of Tribal communities who have traditional and spiritual connections to the land.

But Congress can correct these injustices and ensure that Native people have a long-overdue seat at the decision-making table when it comes to managing sacred and cultural sites.

I’ve been honored to work alongside Native leaders in the fight for environmental justice, including blocking pipelines and other destructive projects sited near Indigenous communities. Together, we have pushed back against Big Polluters and have called on Congress and presidential administrations to take bold action.

For too long, the U.S. government has signed off on fossil fuel infrastructure without getting Tribal consent. But Congress can change that, including through new bills that would ensure that Tribal nations can co-manage their cultural sites on public lands.
