Pat won a competitive toss-up seat earlier this month in the midterm elections. However, Republicans won all the other toss-up seats here in New York in what proved to be a tough election year for NY Democrats. I wanted to take a moment to explain what made our race different.

What Pat and our team accomplished was quite extraordinary. We won not one but two competitive races in 2022. Our special election win in August gave Democrats hope across the country, and our victory this November in a new district shows that our message is one other campaigns could learn from.

Here are some reasons why Pat was able to win in New York when others might not have:

* We leaned in and talked about what Pat’s already accomplished and what he’s going to do in Congress. We focused on tangible results and what we’re going to do to address voters’ biggest concerns. From wearing the uniform in combat for 27 months to increasing funding for our police and actually bringing down violent crime, Pat’s record speaks for itself — but that didn’t stop us from uplifting it every single day.

* Our campaign stayed on the offense, leaving no lie unchecked and being unequivocal in our stances. When our opponents tried to lie about our record, we didn’t let their noise fill the vacuum. We responded quickly and forcefully.

* Pat built a narrative from the heart, centering the campaign on Pat’s willingness to fight for what he believes in and against all threats to democracy. From the start, this campaign was about protecting reproductive freedoms. Even when pundits said that this couldn’t be a winning message, we never backed down.

Overall, Pat’s success was due to his willingness to fight for his community — and to show voters that he can and will deliver results. Even though his district lines changed, he stayed true to his message and won twice.
