Every now and then, someone will ask me: Is Texas is ready to elect an openly LGBTQ Congresswoman? The answer is: Hell yeah, Texas is ready. In 2018, I came up just 926 votes short of flipping TX-23, despite being massively outspent. And in 2020, we’re going to show the country just how ready Texas is when I’m elected the first out LGBTQ member to represent my home state in Congress.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for our community. In my lifetime, we’ve seen the implementation of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” its repeal, the implementation of the transgender military ban, and the first viable LGBTQ candidate for president announce his candidacy - and the last two happened within 48 hours of each other.

It’s no surprise when people ask that question: Is Texas ready? They asked it in Wisconsin before Tammy Baldwin became the first openly LGBTQ U.S. Senator. They asked in Arizona, Kansas, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island before those states elected LGBTQ members of Congress.

And, why wouldn’t Texas be ready? Texans want a representative in Washington who will fight for affordable health care, for better opportunities for our kids, and for equality under the law. I know that folks in Michigan, New Mexico and New York want the same thing, and in 2020 they have the opportunity to elect LGBTQ representatives who share their values and vision for America.
