Dear,
friend of the Journal,
From green cities to the Sargasso Sea, and everything in between, Earth Island Journal reports on inspiring heroes beyond the headlines. We make space for grassroots activists, whose work for our world is having an incredible impact.
- Sharon Lavigne, a former special education teacher who started a faith-based environmental justice organization to stop not one, but two petrochemical companies from expanding into her community.
- Perched 65 feet above the ground, Northern California tree-sitters foiled logging plans. Now they are pushing for long-term protections for redwoods.
- Youth activists are tackling the taboo — but solvable — problems of period poverty and the toxic footprint of single-use menstrual products.
Supporters of Earth Island Journal never miss out on inspiring stories. That's because at the Journal, we have our ears to the ground. As a nonprofit magazine, we rely on the generous support of our readers like you to ensure that the stories we report are available to everyone, with no paywall.
We’re looking for just 75 new donors to give $15/month to our Green Journalism Fund. Your gift will help us cover more of these stories as we head into 2023. Will you be one of these champions of environmental journalism?

Recent years have been challenging, to say the least. Across the world, environmental and social justice activists have fought to have their voices heard. But they never gave up. And we didn’t give up on telling their stories either.
The threat a dangerously warming climate poses can be paralyzing, which is why it’s important to share the stories of everyday people accomplishing extraordinary things on behalf of our planet. They give us hope and inspire us to action.
Many of these stories are underreported because most mainstream newsrooms prioritize other coverage, even in the face of growing evidence of climate chaos and the impending collapse of our biosphere.
When you support the Green Journalism Fund, you support our unique brand of environmental journalism that is a key resource for environmental and social justice activists who are fighting against massive odds to save our planet and its people.
