Here’s your fun fact about Congress for today: We have these small groups
called ‘caucuses.’ They’re basically groups of members with shared
interests, and there are caucuses for some of the most talked about things
in Washington like health care and environmental issues, but also for
narrower interests: the Chicken Caucus, the Cement Caucus, and even the
Bourbon Caucus.
So when I first got to Congress in 2019, my team put a list of all of the
congressional caucuses in front of me. I looked through the long list—and
realized many of the issues that mattered to my family, to my neighbors,
and to the people I had met while campaigning didn’t even have their own
caucus.
I knew I wanted to be a part of shaking up the way things worked in
Washington, and that’s why I co-founded the College Affordability Caucus.
I’m also a part of caucuses that focus on issues like mental health,
ending corruption, and preventing gun violence.
It’s a real problem that many Americans don’t trust Congress, so it’s
important we show Americans their government can work for them. That
starts with members focusing on the issues that matter to working people,
not special interests. The donations politicians receive from corporate
PACs play a role in all of this, and that’s why I’m proud to not accept a
dime of corporate PAC or federal lobbyist money.
