Dear Friend,

I’m not supposed to send you an email like this. As we work to raise $1 million to lift up social movements, I’m supposed to follow the fundraising script and trumpet success stories, telling you that we are on track to solve the world’s most pressing problems. But it’s time for real talk — none of us can afford to keep following the same script.

Yet that’s exactly what leaders from around the world did during climate negotiations in Egypt this past week. Instead of leading, politicians continued to peddle false solutions on behalf of their corporate backers, propping up continued extraction that pollutes the planet and destroys land and livelihoods on the frontlines.

Jeongyeol Kim of Korean Women’s Peasant League at COP27: “women’s seeds have historically served the planet, and they are key again to save our planet.”

While it is frustrating to see political leaders fail people and the planet time and time again, we invite you to shift focus to the real leaders — Indigenous and Black land and water stewards, peasant movements, women, trans, and gender nonconforming people — who are enacting economies of care and sowing the seeds of transformation every day. As Jeongyeol Kim of Korean Women’s Peasant League put it, “women’s seeds have historically served the planet, and they are key again to save our planet.”

Here’s the thing, Friend: we don’t need to wait for politicians to take action. Grassroots International has worked for nearly 40 years to transfer wealth to social movements and grassroots organizations resisting the pillaging of land, water, and food in their territories and communities. Together with your support, we work to dismantle interwoven systems of exploitation from the ground up, creating new ways of living that prioritize care and mutual aid. The truth is, system change requires #EachOneOfUs.

I hope you agree with Solange Koné, World March of Women, that “climate justice is more than a duty of the authorities” and that you’ll make your gift today.

In solidarity,
