Happy New Year from The Heritage Foundation! We’re starting the Roaring Twenties 2.0 with a new list of issues that we will focus on this year. Find out what they are and why they are so important in Heritage President Kay C. James’ latest op-ed. Last week, the United States eliminated Iranian Gen. Qassem Suleimani, arguably the world’s leading terrorist. Our foreign affairs experts weigh in. Here in America, we’re looking at ways we can combat anti-Semitism in the wake of multiple attacks on the Jewish community. Watch our recent roundtable discussion with experts who explain how we can defeat modern anti-Semitism. The Heritage Foundation influenced many policies in 2019 that conservatives can take pride in. Read on to learn what they are, and how we can keep up the momentum in 2020.
These Are the Pivotal Issues That America Faces in 2020 The impeachment of President Trump is front and center in the national spotlight, but we at Heritage are focusing on other important issues that will significantly shape 2020. We have identified four issues in particular where we must drive the debate: China, election integrity, education, and immigration. “What we do about any one of these issues in 2020 could represent a major turning point for America. From safeguarding the right to vote, to protecting the nation from foreign aggression, to deciding whether more taxpayer money is the solution to rising college debt, the new year will certainly provide several opportunities to make pivotal decisions about America’s future,” writes Heritage President Kay C. James. Read more about what’s at stake for each of these policy issues and the choices our lawmakers will face.
Death of Iran’s Gen. Suleimani a ‘Major Victory for the United States’ Last Thursday, the United States successfully eliminated Iranian Gen. Qassem Suleimani, who was responsible for the deaths of more than 600 Americans in Iraq between 2003-2011, and countless more injured. “This strike against one of the world’s most odious terrorists is no different than the mission which took out Osama bin Laden – it is, in fact, even more justifiable since he was in a foreign country directing terrorist attacks against Americans,” says James Carafano, vice president of Heritage’s Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy and E.W. Richardson fellow. “His death is a huge loss for Iran’s regime and its Iraqi proxies, and a major operational and psychological victory for the United States.” Read Carafano’s full statement, and check out Heritage’s new report on why the United States should boost deterrence against Iran.
A New Wave of Anti-Semitism is on the Rise. Here’s How We Can Defeat It. A machete-wielding man stormed into a New York rabbi’s home and stabbed five people during a Hanukkah celebration on Dec. 28. Two weeks before that, a man and woman gunned down a policeman before entering a Kosher grocery store and fatally shooting three people. These are only the latest in an ongoing series of violent anti-Semitic crimes that have spread through the United States and Western Europe. Heritage recently hosted an event to discuss how we can defeat anti-Semitism at home, abroad, and on campus. “I would encourage all of those in government with the motivation and the power to do something about it to do more, because in some respects the threat’s gotten worse, not better,” said Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y, during the event. Find out what Zeldin and other leaders say we can do to effectively combat anti-Semitism.
Heritage Policy Victories in 2019 Conservatives closed 2019 with a number of policy victories, and The Heritage Foundation played an influential role in making them possible. Immigration loopholes were closed, the courts shifted further right, new abortion restrictions saved lives, Congress said “no” to the Green New Deal, and so much more. “As we enter into a new decade, we are primed and ready to keep up the pace,” says Heritage Foundation President Kay C. James. Read more about Heritage’s impact this year.
