Health Benefits Of Cash Assistance

In response to financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 crisis, many
states expanded access to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF). In their November 2022 article, Emily Dore and coauthors find
that the expansion of access to TANF has a protective effect on
participants
<[link removed]>.

The authors find that providing emergency cash benefits to those not
already participating in TANF, waiving work requirements, waiving or
pausing sanctions, and automatically recertifying benefits were
associated with reductions in the number of mentally unhealthy days.

"More generous cash transfer policies and reducing administrative
burdens in safety-net programs can be powerful tools in reducing the
negative mental, physical, and behavioral health responses to stress
created by unemployment and wage loss," Dore and coauthors conclude.

Read the entire November 2022 issue, which includes a collection of
articles exploring the health effects of economic security policies.
