Dear Friend,  As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving, I’ve been reflecting on how grateful I am to be doing this work on behalf of the community I love. Thank you for the honor of representing you in Congress, and for your continued feedback and support as we work to build a stronger, more just country.  This month, I was grateful to spend Veterans Day in San Diego – talking with veterans throughout our community, who have given so much. I traveled back to Washington, D.C., where I introduced new legislation honoring former Congresswoman Susan Davis, spoke on the House Floor about reproductive rights, passed a bill to help protect women in the workplace, and more. Here are some of the recent highlights:Â
|
I’m lucky to call Congresswoman Susan Davis a friend and mentor. She embodies the very best of San Diego, devoting more than 20 years of service to our communities. She always put her constituents first and fiercely advocated and delivered for our kids, students, families, service members and veterans, and the LGBTQ+ community.  That’s why I’m so glad to honor her incredible service by introducing a bill to rename the Rolando post office after her. This effort is the culmination of a years-long, community-driven push and I’m so grateful for the resounding support from all 52 of my California colleagues and many others who served with Susan.

It’s long overdue that we end the toxic workplace system that protects predators and silences survivors, especially young women.  I was proud to vote for the Speak Out Act – to honor the bravery of everyone who has come forward in the #MeToo era. The bill will ban forced non-disclosure agreements in cases of sexual misconduct, and is a powerful step in the right direction to create workplaces that are safe, inclusive, and respectful of everyone.
|
The debate is officially over: abortion rights are a kitchen table issue. On Election Day, abortion rights were on the ballot in five states, and in all five states, abortion rights won.Â
The voters spoke loud and clear – so Congress needs to hear them and pass legislation to protect reproductive rights – like my bill, the My Body, My Data Act – into law.Â

It was so great to join the Veterans Employment Committee and veterans in our community at the largest job fair in San Diego County to support veteran employment and boost our local economy. We need to do more to ensure our veterans have the support and resources they need and that starts with connecting them to good-paying jobs.
|
I loved visiting Grossmont College – speaking with student veterans about my work to support them in Congress, and reading a story to the kids at the campus’s Child Development Center. The CDC is such an important on-campus resource, providing child care for young kids while their parents are in class or working at the college.Â

It was an honor to recognize the new inductees of the LGBT Center of San Diego’s LGBT Veterans Wall of Honor that recognizes and celebrates local LGBTQ+ veterans who served under anti-LGBTQ+ policies or who served after the ending of those harmful policies.  There’s still so much work left to do to end discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community in the military and everywhere across our country, and I’m grateful for our community’s continued leadership and advocacy.
