January 6, 2020: During 2019, a total of 30.2 million Americans moved to a new home.[1]
Census Bureau figures show that two-thirds of the movers—18.8 million Americans—moved to a new home in the same county. Another 6.7 million moved to a different county in the same state while just 4.7 million set up a home in a different state.[1]
On top of that, 1.1 million residents moved into the United States from some other country.[1]
Almost half—12.7 million—moved for housing-related reasons such as preferring to own rather than rent or wanting a better home to meet their needs. Another 8.4 million moved for family reasons such as a change in marital status or a desire to set up their own home.[2]
Job-related factors were the reason for 6.6 million people to move. This includes people who got a new job or wanted to be closer to work.[2]
Finally, 3.6 million moved for a variety of other reasons including health issues and attending or leaving college.[2]
