DC Could Prohibit Fur Sales: Make Your Voice Heard

Dear John,

In urban societies, fur coats and trim are vanity products, and millions of animals suffer and die needlessly for these "luxury" garments. Animals farmed for their fur lead miserable, deprived lives in cramped, barren cages. Furs are also obtained from animals in the wild, who are caught in an array of brutal devices, including steel-jaw leghold traps and strangling snares. The fashion world has started to transition away from this cruel practice, and it's time for Washington, DC, to do the same.

Fortunately, the DC Council is considering the Fur Products Prohibition Act (Bill 24-0578) ([link removed]), which would ban the sale of fur in the District. The prohibition does not apply to leather products, taxidermied animals, cowhide, or lamb/sheepskin, and has exemptions for second-hand fur products, nonprofit organizations, and religious uses.

What You Can Do

The Council needs to hear from DC residents in support of the ban!
* Attend a webinar hosted by DC Voters for Animal Rights to learn how to prepare testimony and make your voice heard. Details: Thursday, December 1, 2022, 7:00 p.m. EST - RSVP here ([link removed]).
* Testify at the virtual public hearing on Thursday, December 8, at 9:30 a.m. See the online hearing notice ([link removed]) for details, and be sure to email Facebook ([link removed]), Twitter ([link removed]), and Instagram ([link removed]) for other important animal protection actions and news.
