NEW LEXILE & QUANTILE VIDEO FOR FAMILIES

For Teachers and School Leaders

  • Assist families in understanding how to use their child’s Lexile and Quantile measures to boost learning at home. Lexile and Quantile measures are found on the WY-TOPP and WY-ALT assessment results report that parents recently received from last year’s assessments.
  • This video, created by MetaMetrics and Learning Heroes, will help parents understand and utilize these measures to reinforce student learning at home. The video is also provided in Spanish.

PAEMST 2022-23 AWARD CYCLE

Nominations Open

  • The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest honors bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and/or computer science teachers.
  • Anyone may nominate exceptional STEM educators and computer science teachers currently teaching grades 7-12.  
  • Teachers may also apply directly.

TEACHER OPPORTUNITIES

  1. EdReports is seeking content reviewers with deep content knowledge and experience in college and career-readiness standards for K-12 ELA, science, or mathematics, to assess instructional materials. Learn more and apply here.
  2. BSCS Science Learning is seeking high school science teachers to take part in a research study. Learn more here
  3. The Wyoming Association of Elementary School Principals, UW College of Education, and UW Literacy Research Center and Clinic are offering professional development for school leaders and educators at any grade level. The Literacy Leadership Ⅰ WyoLearn course will help educators understand key components of a comprehensive literacy program and provide guidance for developing a program in their schools. STUDENT COMPETITIONS

  1. Conrad Challenge (entrepreneurial research and innovation design for ages 13-18).
  2. Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (research for grades 9-12).
  3. Wyoming regional science fairs.
  4. National Science Bowl (exam for grades 6-12).
  5. Science Olympiad (for grades 9-12).
  6. 3M Young Scientist Challenge (grades 5-8).
  7. USA Biolympiad (exam for grades 9-12). 
  8. U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (exam for grades 9-12). 
  9. NCTE Promising Young Writers stimulates and recognizes the writing talents of eighth-grade students. 
  10. The John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Essay Contest asks students in grades 9-12 to describe and analyze an act of political courage. Cash prizes available. Entry deadline is January 13, 2023.
  11. Rise is a program that finds people who need opportunity and supports them for life as they work to serve others. The program is for youth ages 15-17 and offers a lifetime of benefits including scholarships, mentorship, access to career development opportunities, funding, and more. 

RESOURCES, COMPETITIONS, AND FUNDING

  1. The Science Professional Learning Standards were developed by the Council of State Science Supervisors to support science educators in making informed decisions about the attributes, implementation, and evaluation of professional learning experiences.
  2. The Wyoming State Museum has educational trunks, and virtual field trips are available. Check with them or your local museums for standards-aligned resources.
  3. The We ❤️ Veterans Pin Design Challenge encourages students to create a 3D model of a wearable pin that thanks veterans. Entries due December 14, 2022.
  4. NCTE, with support from the Educating for American Democracy project, has released a new guide, Reading, Writing, & Raising Voices: The Centrality of Literacy to Civic Education. This guide is meant to help educators and school leaders create continuous harmony between literacy instruction and civic life.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE)

  1. ACTE's CareerTech Vision annual conference is November 30-December 3, 2022.
    • Join over 4,000 secondary and postsecondary career and technical educators, business leaders, and industry professionals from around the world.
  2. Career Development Facilitator Course. Learn best practices to support career planning in multiple settings across all ages in this series February-April 2023.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Poetry Out Loud is a free, national program offered by the National Endowment for the Arts. 

  • Students from grades 9-12 learn about great poetry through recitation and performance. 
  • Prizes are awarded, including a free trip to compete in Washington, D.C.
  • Deadline to register for the state competition is January 20, 2023.
  • Registered schools will receive free multimedia toolkits that include a teacher’s guide complete with lesson plans, guidance on classroom contests, evaluation criteria, posters, and a customizable contest announcement poster.
