Dear Green American,

Kroger needs to hear from you directly about its largest source of direct greenhouse gas emissions.

As many of you know, supermarkets use a lot of energy, and up to 60 percent is used for cooling and heating systems. But the largest climate impacts come from the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants themselves.

A typical supermarket consumes 4,000 pounds of refrigerants each year with a quarter leaking out due to faulty systems.

Refrigerant leaks from US supermarkets emit 45 million metric tons of greenhouse gases every year (the equivalent of 9.5 million cars on the road).

Kroger is the largest grocery chain in the US and is failing to take action on HFCs. HFCs account for a staggering 63% of Kroger’s direct climate emissions, but Kroger is only committing to install non-HFC refrigerants in 7 out of their 2,800 stores. At this rate, it would take Kroger hundreds of years to move off HFCs!

Show Kroger that customers want the grocery giant to act fast. Many of you have taken action, but this time we’re doing something new.

Kroger has a “comment section” on its website where customers can leave messages for the company. Together, we want to leave them thousands of comments about its HFC problem.

Please take a moment to let Kroger know you care about the climate crisis and what it can do about it. And let me know what you hear from them!

Sample Comment

Dear Kroger – As a consumer that cares, I am leaving a comment to urge you to address your HFC emissions in your refrigeration systems. HFCs are potent greenhouse gasses that are rapidly rising and spurring climate change. If we don’t address the issue of HFCs, the devasting effects of climate change will get even worse.

Kroger could be a leader on this issue; instead, it is dragging its heels and undermining efforts by the industry as a whole to move toward HFC-free alternatives. In 2016, the Consumer Goods Forum issued a voluntary resolution on behalf of its member companies, including Kroger, to adopt ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants and replace current HFC systems rapidly. Kroger opposed the resolution.

Kroger needs to take action immediately or it risks hurting the communities it serves. And the technologies to fix your HFC problem are commercially available and cost effective, which is why your competitors are adopting them. There are hundreds of climate-friendly supermarkets I can shop at which are HFC-free across the country.  Please make sure that Kroger stores join their ranks by:

  • Using only HFC-free systems in all new locations;

  • Releasing concrete timelines to phase out HFCs from all facilities by 2030;

  • Rapidly repairing refrigerant leaks and publishing annual leak rates;

  • And ensuring responsible refrigerant disposal to reduce emissions.

Thank you and please do let me know if you hear from Kroger
