John,
Last week was a busy one for CREW—to say the least.
Donald Trump announced that he would run for president again—and in response, we renewed our promise that, when the law allows, we will take immediate action to ensure that the Constitution’s ban on insurrectionists holding office is enforced.
Of course, Trump announcing that he is running for president again is a big deal, given his incitement of the January 6th insurrection, endless corruption and abuses of power. And while we’re going to do everything we can to ensure that the Disqualification Clause is enforced against Trump, there’s also a lot of other pressing work we’ve been up to recently.
Here’s what else you may have missed:
- We’ve continued to track Trump’s corruption since he left office, and his grifting recently hit a new milestone: government officials and political candidates have made more than 500 visits to Trump properties since January 2021. In addition to candidates seeking to curry Trump’s favor and earn his endorsement, 67 members of Congress have also visited Trump properties 187 times, lining his pockets with hundreds of thousands of dollars.
-
It sure looks like Trump will be indicted in Georgia soon, and we took a look at what that means, including what charges he may face, and the substantial public evidence that his huge efforts to overturn that state’s 2020 election results amounted to solicitation of election fraud and conspiracy to commit election fraud.
-
Trump-appointed Architect of the Capitol J. Brett Blanton abused his authority and wasted taxpayer money, according to a recent Inspector General report. We outlined why his abuses are so serious—and why Congress should make a bipartisan call for his resignation.
-
And finally, we sent a letter to all 50 state attorneys general and attorneys general-elects, calling on them to use their authority to enforce the Disqualification Clause against disqualified insurrectionists who may have just been elected in their state. Where the evidence supports disqualification and removal, it is a state attorneys’ general constitutional duty to act.
We’re also still working hard to encourage Congress to pass a Congressional stock ban in the lame duck session— you can add your name to help us keep up the pressure here—and to encourage the Senate to pass the ENABLERS Act.
It’s been a busy month at CREW, because the fight against corruption and to protect our democracy never lets up. No matter what, we’re here to keep up the fight—and we couldn’t be more grateful to have you in the fight with us.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
