As someone whose family members have been harmed by the carceral system, I know it’s not something anyone should have to go through alone. Looking back, I’ve wondered how my own journey would have been different had my family received the support we needed.
Today, I work with an amazing group of people that support others going through the legal system through our Participatory Defense program at Grassroots Leadership. Our PD program allows for members of the community to receive the support they need as they navigate the criminal legal system. The total time saved from incarceration through Austin and Houston’s PD work in 2021 was approximately 4,208 days. That’s more than a decade where loved ones can stay together.
We still have a long way before criminalization and mass incarceration are things of the past, and if you believe in the work we do, help us continue empowering our communities with your generous donation this Giving Tuesday.
