In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday this week in the U.S., we want to say how thankful we are for our partners. The mayors and local leaders bringing communities together. The artists revitalizing neighborhoods. The public health practitioners fighting to save lives. The educators and experts helping students succeed. The advocates and innovators building a greener, healthier future. And so many more. We're glad to share some of the most recent work that Bloomberg Philanthropies is leading and supporting with many of those partners today: We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! — Bloomberg Philanthropies Last week we launched our third Public Art Challenge, which will grant as much as $1 million to up to 10 U.S. cities for public art projects that build community, tackle civic issues, and drive creative partnerships. Previously selected cities developed creative community-led projects to address challenges from healing after gun violence to climate change. Together, these projects have spurred policy changes and more than $100 million in economic development. Mayors have until February 15 to apply.
America is facing multiple public health crises at once — from the overdose epidemic to the fallout from COVID-19. On December 6 in Philadelphia, the main plenary session of the Bloomberg American Health Summit will convene policymakers, experts, innovators, and others for conversations about urgently needed and eminently achievable ways to make progress and save lives. Speakers will include CDC Director Rochelle Walensky; New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Mary T. Bassett; New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham; Health Commissioner of Philadelphia Department of Public Health Dr. Cheryl Bettigole; Bloomberg American Health Initiative Director Dr. Josh M. Sharfstein; and Mike Bloomberg.
What happens when more than 500 mayors, artists, experts, and innovators come together to talk about the future? Insightful conversations, creative and collaborative solutions, and — most importantly — a powerful sense of hope. Take a moment to look back at Bloomberg CityLab 2022 and see how city leaders around the world are coming together to take on the biggest challenges.
The city of Mumbai has struggled with heavy — and deadly — traffic for many years. Through street improvements, safety awareness campaigns, and other collaborative interventions, the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety has worked with local planners to reduce the number of road fatalities in Mumbai by 43%, according to 2020 data.
