350Brooklyn’s New People vs. Fossil Fuels Working Group
Tuesday, November 29th, 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm EST
350Brooklyn has joined People vs. Fossil Fuels. The goals of the coalition are to demand President Biden declare a climate emergency, stop federal approval of all new fossil fuel projects, and support frontline communities fighting carbon-based energy infrastructure. Our first PVFF working group meeting will take place on Zoom.
Want to take action before our kickoff meeting? The Schumer-Manchin fossil fuel deal is back! Senator Chuck Schumer is the single largest recipient of campaign funds from NextEra energy, whose Mountain Valley Pipeline project could get fast-tracked in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2022 before the end of the year. You can find all the resources you need to make a call or send an email on our website.
Visit 350Brooklyn’s People vs. Fossil Fuels workgroup page for more information, email [email protected] with any questions. Get involved with this new workgroup and help build a new campaign from the ground up!
No Power Hour the Week of November 21st, Rest Up and Be Thankful for the Passage of The Environmental Bond Act
We’ll See You the Week of November 28th!
Get your weekly dose of climate action in our one-hour, action-packed sessions Mondays and Wednesdays by joining Power Hour! During the weeks of November 28th and December 5th (Monday, November 28th 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST and Wednesday, November 30th 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST) we will join forces with Stop The Money Pipeline to oppose Citi, one of the biggest funders of the fossil fuel industry. Since the passage of the Paris Agreement, Citi has lent more than two hundred and eighty five BILLION dollars to fossil fuel companies such as Exxon, Chevron and BP. Citi is also the biggest funder of fossil fuel expansion in Africa. Public pressure recently led Citi to announce a new commitment to phase out some of their coal-oriented projects. This is a good start, but nowhere near enough. It is critical to keep up the pressure and convince Citi to lead the way as the banking industry phases out their practice of funding projects that fuel the climate crisis.
For Power Hours taking place on Wednesday (12:00 pm -1:00 pm EST) we will welcome the return of the Skip The Stuff campaign and momentum for the Zero Waste bill. We will reach out to City Council Members, starting here in New York City, to ask if they will testify or submit testimony on these measures. We will review discussion points to help craft our own comments.
For the Wednesday evening Power Hour on November 30th at 8:00 pm EST we will focus on drafting letters and comments in support of the Stop the Chopper Campaign. On Wednesday, December 7th at 8:00 pm EST we will prepare testimony for the upcoming Skip the Stuff bill (Intro 0559) hearing which will take place Monday, December 12th at 10:00 am EST. Please register if you plan to join the hearing online or in-person.
Submit to Parts Per Million!
Parts Per Million is is seeking submissions for our first themed issue, which will be “Our City.” How are the five boroughs of NYC affected by climate change and how are they dealing with it? What do you see or not see happening locally to combat it? What has your personal response been to that and have you found ways to channel your concern into action? Are there examples of resilience or progress that give you hope? Submissions can be of original work in any medium! We encourage a limit of 3,000 words for written submissions, and a maximum length of 5 minutes for audio or video. Please send all submissions (and questions) to [email protected] by November 30th, 2022. Be sure to include your full name, pronouns, and the title of your submission(s). We will review all submissions and respond within two weeks of the deadline. Thank you so much for your interest and we hope to hear from you soon!
Help Kids Write Letters to Governor Kathy Hochul!
Do you have a child in your life? Do they want to be a climate activist just like you? No need to wait until they grow up, here’s a simple activity you can both do that will have a big impact right now! This holiday season, 350Brooklyn Families are teaming up with Climate Families NYC and NYRenews to collect letters from kids, youth, and caregivers across New York State demanding our leaders pass the Climate, Jobs and Justice Package. We are aiming to have a big Miracle on 34th Street-style stack of letters to deliver in person and we need help getting the word out. Can your family write/draw letters? Can you share these instructions with another family? Or tell your neighbors to make it a block party in the winter? Even very little ones can participate at whatever level of artistry they are able to! Click here to find out how.
Listen to Climate Check's Newest Episode, "Renewable Rikers and the Quest for Justice"
In February of 2021, the NYC City Council passed laws that will reshape Rikers, the prison located on an island off the coast of Queens, which began as a penal colony built on a landfill in 1932. These bills are part of a campaign that was years in the making called Renewable Rikers, led by a coalition that crossed interests and areas of focus. In this episode, host Eva Dean talks with Darren Mack, a co-founder of Freedom Agenda, a formerly incarcerated person, and a survivor of Rikers. They’ll discuss the historic Renewable Rikers bills, Darren's foray in activism, and how environmental justice and criminal justice reform are inextricably linked. Listen here, or wherever you get your podcasts.
We Won! New York Voters Pass the Environmental Bond Act!
This past Election Day, the New York State electorate overwhelmingly cast their votes for the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. Sixty-seven percent of voters state-wide, and eighty-one percent of New York City checked "yes!” These bonds will finance a host of infrastructure improvements, renewable energy projects, clean water and flood control systems, and new parks, creating an estimated one hundred thousand jobs in the process. Many thanks to all of you who voted to support the Environmental Bond Act.
