Dear John,

An area rug. Bubble baths. Going to the refrigerator anytime I want. Being able to hug my mother. 

These are the things Jay* listed when I asked what he missed out on during his 26 years of incarceration.

Field trips. High school proms. Graduations. Marriage. Years with my family. Opportunities to do good. 

Jay received a life without parole sentence when he was only 16 years old. 

Reality set in that he was going to die in prison. He wasn’t going to pass the prison gates unless he was in a body bag or someone carried him out. 

I was overwhelmed with hopelessness.

As he heard about The Sentencing Project, our work, court cases being scheduled, rulings being made, he felt a flutter of hope.
