Hi, ACLU Supporter – I know it's a busy time with the holidays coming up, but I'd like to steal a second of your time to talk honestly with you about an important moment for us next week: Giving Tuesday. It might not seem it, but this day really is significant to the ACLU's work and one of our best chances to secure the type of resources we're going to need to keep all of our efforts going strong – from voting rights to abortion access to LGBTQ equality to racial justice to immigrants' rights and so much more. So that's why I'm reaching out like this. It's a little early, but as one of our most dedicated supporters, I wanted to let you in on our plans for Giving Tuesday – November 29 – and ask you to save the date for us.
ACLU Supporter, our ask is going to be a little different this Giving Tuesday. I've shared an email below from our team that expresses how much our community can accomplish in a single year by showing up when it counts – and showing up together. And knowing our work is to create lasting, systemic change, we'll be asking supporters like you to show up again on November 29 – this time for the long-haul fight – by committing to a recurring monthly donation. When you do, your first monthly gift will be matched for twice the impact and you'll join our dedicated group of year-round supporters – our Guardians of Liberty. This year, you showed up for people's rights alongside us time and again – from SCOTUS all through the elections. And now that Donald Trump has indicated his desire to return to the Oval Office, let me be clear that the ACLU is ready to meet whatever challenges lie ahead, too. But this fight is ongoing, and giving monthly is the easiest and most impactful way for you to defend the future of civil liberties. So please take a moment to save the date for us on Giving Tuesday, November 29. Or, if you're ready to take advantage of this special matching gift opportunity now, you can make your monthly gift today. No matter what, thank you for fighting alongside us as we work toward a future where "We the People" means all of us. Until next week, Anthony D. Romero |
Showing up together has made an impact, ACLU Supporter |

ACLU Supporter, from the outset of this year, we knew 2022 was going to demand a great deal from us. People's civil rights and civil liberties were on the line like we had not seen in generations. The Supreme Court's devastating and harmful decision to overturn Roe v. Wade this summer. Elected officials in states far and wide choosing anti-civil liberty agendas – from anti-trans bills targeting young people to voter suppression and discriminatory gerrymandering to classroom censorship, book bans, and more. A long and arduous midterms election season resulting ultimately in hard-won gains down the ballot for reproductive freedom, voting rights, and more. Donald Trump announcing his intention to run for the presidency again just this Tuesday – and our absolute promise to be here and ready to defend civil liberties no matter what happens. Through all of this, ACLU Supporter, you showed up. You showed up with us and for us in the fight back. And if you're wondering where our lawyers, advocates, and organizers found the reserves of strength it took this year to keep defending our rights even in the face of ongoing attacks – it is in no small part because of you. No matter what the challenge, we show up always – you and the ACLU – and that has meant everything in the fight to protect our civil liberties this year. While we still have a little over a month left of 2022, we wanted to take a moment before the holidays to show our gratitude for being such a constant – and to let you know how much we've achieved together so far: |
|||
In the Courts |
|||
Strengthened by your activism and support, our attorneys secured 50 wins in our legal cases across the country since May – from reproductive freedom to voting rights to the rights of trans youth and more. |
|||
At the Ballots |
|||
You helped advance the ACLU's massive midterm efforts to get voters to the ballot box in defense of abortion access, voting rights, trans justice, racial justice, and all civil liberties ahead of the 2022 elections – educating voters on sheriff, district attorney, state supreme court races, and more in key states. Our voting rights lawyers also have been litigating 11 redistricting cases in 7 states, and 8 voter suppression cases in 5 states – both during this election year and before – to ensure the rights of all voters across the country are as safe and equal as possible.
On Capitol Hill & at the White House |
|||
All year, you also helped us hold those in power accountable for the rights of all people – you and your fellow ACLU activists took over 474,390 total actions with us. You contacted your officials across the Senate and the House urging them to secure abortion access for all, protect voting rights, address racist sentencing laws, and more. And you sent messages and signed petitions to the Biden administration demanding action for immigrant families separated at the border, to put a stop to racial profiling by law enforcement, to defend LGBTQ equality, and beyond.
On the Ground & Across the States
You fueled the on-the-ground work of our affiliates in all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and helped us fight unconstitutional bills and laws in state legislatures nationwide through our advocacy and litigation efforts. Nearly 20,445 activists joined our Abortion Activism Series this summer immediately following the overturning of Roe, and 1,660 volunteers signed up to phone and text bank their fellow voters to cast their ballots for civil liberties in the lead-up to the midterm elections all as part of ACLU's grassroots People Power network.
ACLU Supporter, we know in longer fights like the one we are in right now – it can be easy to lose track of the very tangible and significant change our incremental wins make across the nation. But we hope this all reminds you just how much progress we have made together by showing up when it counts – when our democracy and our civil liberties depend on it. Thank you again for being with us in this essential work. And make no mistake that we will keep showing up for you and your rights too – for the rest of this year, in 2023, and beyond. Always, The ACLU Team |
