Last week I got you up to speed on the ongoing corruption scandal involving Clarence Thomas, his wife, and the 2020 election — but now John, it seems he’s not the only justice daring Congress to investigate misconduct at the Supreme Court.
Over the weekend,
The New York Times published
a bombshell report alleging that in 2014,
Justice Samuel Alito leaked the outcome of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby — which gave corporations the right to deny contraception coverage to their employees — to right-wing donors. As if that wasn’t enough, the story also sheds light on
a multi-year campaign by conservative activists and donors to woo and influence the conservative justices.
These scandals are just further examples of the rot at the center of this institution. We’re working with our allies to put pressure on Congress to open an investigation into these allegations — will you join us?
Throughout this year we’ve seen the right-wing justices attempt to defend the so-called integrity of the Court as more and more Americans lose faith in it and in the objectivity of its rulings. Alito even went as far as denouncing the leak of the
Dobbs decision as a “grave betrayal” of trust. Well, it seems that the call is actually coming from inside the house at the Supreme Court, and it has never been more obvious that we cannot trust these justices to police themselves.
Congress has a duty to step up as a co-equal branch of government and conduct a swift, thorough investigation. They must look into whether one of the justices is systemically leaking sensitive information to right-wing political allies.
The American people deserve to know that right-wing politicians dressed in black robes aren't selling out our judiciary to the highest bidder. The more people sign our letter to Congress, the more public scrutiny will intensify around this broken, out of touch Court in desperate need of reform:
