LULAC Joins In Solidarity With LGBTQ+ Community And The Nation In Denouncing The
Mass Shooting At A Gay Club In Colorado
================================================================================

Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Says the Attack Is a
Painful Reminder of the Sexual Bigotry that Still Exists Silently in America and
Is Fueled by the Faith-Based Community's Hate Speech Against the Other
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the
following statement on the mass shooting at Club Q, a gay and lesbian nightclub
in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The gunman killed five people and wounded 25
others before patrons in the business managed to subdue him. He was taken into
custody by police, and prosecutors say the attack was motivated by a bias against
the victims.

Domingo García – LULAC National President
"LULAC strongly denounces this massacre and calls on Congress and the Biden
Administration to move swiftly to make hate crimes of this nature a federal
capital offense, with no deals for the cowards who commit them. Also, LULAC calls
out the religious bigots who are silent when these attacks are committed but are
constantly spewing vile hate speech from their pulpits in the name of God and
faith. The blood of these innocent victims is on their hands before God, and
their silence is their condemnation of guilt. LULAC calls the mass shootings the
product of our nation's hypocrisy that claims to value life but fails to defend
those different from them."

Jesse Garcia – LULAC National LGBTQ Affairs Committee Chair
"Transgender Day of Remembrance 2022 reminded us how LGBTQ communities need our
support, advocacy, and protection. We mourn the 32 transgender lives taken from
us through violent means this past year, and our hearts and prayers go out to the
victims of the Colorado Springs Club Q mass shooting. They bravely fought back
and prevented more deaths from happening. LULAC stands with its LGBTQ family."

Rodolfo Rosales, Texas LULAC - First openly gay LULAC State Director
"LULAC would like to express our sympathy to the families and friends of the
victims of this senseless hate crime. Now is not the time for thoughts and
prayers alone. We must act on sensible gun safety legislation. The families of
gun violence deserve nothing less than good gun safety laws that can help prevent
shootings like these in Colorado Springs or Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, and
many other shootings. We deserve better from our legislators."
