WASHINGTON—The Co-Chairs of the Blue Dog Coalition—Reps. Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01), Ed Case (HI-01), Stephanie Murphy (FL-07), and Kurt Schrader (OR-05)—issued the following statement on House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s announcement that he would not seek an elected leadership position in the 118th Congress:

“The Blue Dog Coalition has long-counted Majority Leader Steny Hoyer as a great friend and advocate. Throughout his career, he has encouraged and welcomed the voices of our members in vital decisions about the direction of our country. 

“Steny has been a unifying force for Democrats of all stripes and has helped the party keep a laser focus on the kitchen table issues that truly impact the American people – like his ‘Made in America’ agenda putting American workers and businesses at the forefront of the global economy.  He has helped lead our Democratic Majority to pass some of the most consequential legislation in our history, from the Affordable Care Act to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act. By building consensus and ensuring that voices from all corners of the party are heard, he has made sure these accomplishments are durable and targeted to reach the Americans who need our help most. 

“We will deeply miss Leader Hoyer in Caucus leadership; he has always put the institution first and always had the respect of the entire Democratic Caucus and counted many of his Republican colleagues as friends.  We will continue to depend on him as a voice for pragmatic and principled decision making to deliver actual results for the American people.”
