As a lifelong journalist and someone raised to believe that respectful debate and honest differences are part of the joy of an open society, the erosion of fact-based expression is disheartening. And, it's undermining democracy.
But, I am an optimist and think we have an obligation to lead rather than only lament. I believe the work we accomplish at Poynter through training to improve journalism and the sustainability of local news organizations is making a difference. I'm enormously proud of the work Poynter accomplishes through PolitiFact, the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, MediaWise and the International Fact-Checking Network.
