Team,
My heart is with the people of Colorado Springs impacted by last night's devastating act of violence. Nobody should face the threat of harassment, assault, or death simply for living as the person they are.
But last night is a heartbreaking reminder that countless LGBTQ+ Americans – particularly Black transgender women – face hate, harassment, and violence every day.
I want to make one thing clear: We should all be committed to equality and equity for the entire LGBTQ+ community.
Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. It's a day we remember, honor, and celebrate the transgender and gender non-conforming Americans who were taken from us as a result of hatred and intolerance.
Every person has a right to exist, live, and be who they are. We cannot tolerate the hate and violence that is increasingly directed at our trans neighbors, loved ones, and friends. I will continue to fight back against any policy that treats any American like a second-class citizen.
On this Transgender Day of Remembrance – and every day – I hope you'll join me in remembering and honoring the lives we have lost. Today is a chance to recommit to defending the rights and liberties of EVERY American.
As always, it's an honor to represent you.
– Derek
