The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and CIJA celebrate
Vancouver City Council’s adoption of the International
Holocaust Remembrance Association’s (IHRA) definition of
antisemitism.
This historic announcement marked the culmination of years of
advocacy by Vancouver’s organized Jewish community representatives and
follows examples set by the UN, the EU, and more than 30 countries
including the US and Canada. The adoption of IHRA signals that
Vancouver City Council recognizes the struggles faced by the Jewish
community and that it stands in solidarity against Jew-hatred and all
forms of hate.
Please
send Mayor Sim and Vancouver City Council a note of thanks for
adopting this gold-standard tool for defining antisemitism and for
their commitment to apply it to government policies and
actions.
As
discussed last week, controversial French rapper Freeze Corleone,
who was strongly denounced in France for the fundamentally antisemitic
lyrics of his songs, was scheduled to perform in Montreal. We are
pleased to report that the event has now been cancelled by the
venue.
Despite initially citing “freedom of expression” as justification
to continue with the concert, the Montreal venue later heeded the
calls of thousands of community members deeply troubled that Corleone
was being provided a new platform to disseminate his hate.
CIJA's Eta Yudin spoke at length with Elias Makos, host of The
Elias Makos Show on CJAD 800.
CIJA has joined 180 civil rights groups from around the world in
sending “Elon, Twitter has an antisemitism problem,” a letter to Twitter
owner Elon Musk that calls on him to adopt the International
Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of
antisemitism to fight the rampant
Jew-hatred on the social media platform.
Demonstrating the seriousness of Twitter’s antisemitism problem,
the letter to Musk includes more than a thousand examples of
antisemitic tweets that fall under the IHRA definition. The joint
letter also recommends a way for Twitter to flag antisemitic tweets
while educating users about Jew-hatred.
