Friend, today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the trans and nonbinary people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
Today, we commemorate the lives of those trans and nonbinary individuals, and we remind all trans and nonbinary young people of our unending commitment to your safety and well-being: The Trevor Project has your back.
This year, legislatures have continued to put forth anti-trans bills with politicians running for office on anti-trans rhetoric. Fatal violence has also continued in our trans community, with at least 32 (these stories often go unreported) transgender people lost their lives to anti-trans violence in 2022. This cannot stand, and we cannot look away.
In the face of adversity, we must remain committed to advocating for trans-inclusive policies, creating affirming spaces, and showing support for the transgender and nonbinary people in our lives. We can never stop growing our strength as a community, together.
As we honor the trans and nonbinary lives lost, we want to offer our solidarity and care. If you’re looking for an action to take today, know there are always ways to make a difference:
- SUPPORT TRANSGENDER AND NONBINARY YOUNG PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE: Download our Guide to Being an Ally to Trans and Nonbinary Young People today to help create a safer, kinder and more accepting world. Check out the guide >>
- ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE: The Trevor Project leads the largest campaign in the world to protect LGBTQ young people from conversion therapy through legislation, litigation, and public education. Join us to take action to end conversion therapy today >>
- HELP US BE THERE FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE: Every LGBTQ young person deserves to feel accepted and loved. Unfortunately, not all of them do. That’s why The Trevor Project is here. We know that having one accepting adult can reduce the likelihood of LGBTQ youth attempting suicide by 40%. Learn more about how Trevor supports Every Single One >>
Today must go beyond mourning and remembrance. In 2022, fewer than 1 in 3 transgender and nonbinary young people found their home to be gender-affirming, but acceptance from at least one adult can decrease the risk of LGBTQ youth attempting suicide by 40%. Healing from discrimination and trauma includes being there for one another.
Thank you for being there for the trans and nonbinary young people in your life.
In solidarity,
Cassidy Dallas
