Dear John,
Republicans just barely won the majority in the House of Representatives, but they’re going full speed ahead with their plan to slash Social Security by threatening to force the federal government into default unless Democrats give in.
It’s madness, but it’s exactly what they did under President Obama, and they’ll do it again unless we sound the alarm and fight back.
Inequality Media Civic Action played a critical role in helping educate voters during the midterm elections about economic issues with our viral videos and massive following across Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok.
Now we need to do the same thing to get the truth out and stop the Republican attacks on Social Security. But coming out of the midterm elections, we need to replenish our funds to launch the strongest campaign possible.
So I’m asking you today: Will you make a donation and help support our work, including to draw attention to Republican attacks on Social Security?
Republicans want people to think that raising the debt ceiling increases the federal debt. But that’s simply wrong. Lifting the debt ceiling simply allows the government to pay bills it has already taken on.
In fact, if Congress refused to lift the debt ceiling, it would cause the U.S. government to default on its debt, likely causing interest rates to skyrocket and plunge the global economy into a fiscal crisis like nothing we’ve seen since the Great Recession.
It’s the height of irresponsibility to even threaten a government default, but MAGA Republicans don’t care. These are largely the people who fomented an insurrection to overturn an election, and now they’re threatening to take the entire economy hostage.
Democrats can protect Social Security right now by raising the debt ceiling during the post-election lame duck session of Congress, before Republicans take over the House.
Or better yet, they could simply repeal the law that imposes a debt ceiling in the first place. It serves no purpose other than to create leverage for a party willing to blow up the economy to enact policy they couldn’t pass any other way.
Inequality Media Civic Action is calling on Democrats to do just that while educating voters about the economy, the debt ceiling, and Social Security with our viral videos, explainers, and posts on social media.
But after all that we’ve spent in the midterm elections, we need supporters to chip in to give us the resources we need to stop the Republicans’ attacks on Social Security. Will you make a donation today?
Yes, I’ll donate to help get the truth out and stop the Republican attacks on Social Security.
We couldn’t do any of this work without your support,
Robert Reich
