John,
The Senate may pass a bill to protect same-sex marriages. This is an important step, but there’s still so much work to do to protect the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ people in the U.S.
Ongoing discrimination impacts LGBTQ+ people in so many areas of life, including getting a job, finding a place to live, getting served in stores, and more. Trans people already face high rates of harassment, violence, homelessness, criminalization, and suicide. But new homophobic and transphobic calls for book bans in schools are on the rise, as many states are also attempting bans on lifesaving, medically necessary gender-affirming healthcare.
With Republicans taking over the House of Representatives following this month’s midterm elections, we can anticipate more federal attacks on queer and trans people alongside ongoing state-level attacks.
Already, Congressional Republicans have introduced a national version of Florida’s discriminatory “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would essentially prohibit public schools from discussing LGBTQ+ people, histories, or identities with students younger than 10.
We cannot dismiss this hateful and growing right-wing movement to scapegoat queer and trans people. Now is the time to keep pushing for a society where everyone, including LGBTQ+ people, can live openly and safely as their authentic selves.
Please sign the petition if you oppose congressional Republican attacks on LGBTQ+ rights.
In solidarity,
Rashida
