Even as we approach the end of the year and the holiday season, our work is not stopping. We will continue getting things done to ensure job seekers are prepared to enter the workforce, that families can put food on the table and warm their homes, and that our veterans and military members are supported. As we look ahead to 2023, we also want to continue hearing your thoughts about state government and how we can build Michigan’s future together.
If the resources you’re looking for aren’t in this email, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office at Michigan.gov/Whitmer or at (517) 335-7858. I will continue working with anyone to put Michiganders first.
Apprenticeships play an important role in preparing job seekers for the workforce. They benefit both employers who need skilled talent and Michigan workers who gain skill toward good paying, in-demand jobs, without putting them further in tuition debt. I’ve declared November 14-20 as Michigan Apprenticeship Week to emphasize the role of apprenticeships in supporting careers and to encourage Michiganders to take advantage of programs that provide them with credentials for the future.
Industry-driven, high-quality career training programs ensure the state’s economy continues to grow and thrive. Completing a registered apprenticeship program can result in a nationally recognized credential. These programs contribute to our Sixty by 30 initiative to increase the number of working-age adults in the state with a skill certificate or college degree to 60% by the year 2030.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has several programs available to help people access resources when they are in need. The State Emergency Relief Program assists low-income households that are normally able to make ends meet but occasionally need help when unexpected situations arise. If you are at risk of losing your home, if you need help with home repairs and weatherization especially as the winter months get closer, or if you need some help keeping on your electricity and heat, I encourage you to apply for assistance and get the resources you need this holiday season.
Veterans Day may have passed, but our support for them and military members is a year-round effort. We extend our gratitude to our veterans and service members by reminding them of the benefits that they may be entitled to. The Department of Treasury administers a variety of benefits for veterans and military members and their families, including tuition grants and exemptions for both military income taxes and property taxes. Michigan’s outdoor recreation system – including public lands and waters, playgrounds and bike paths, and so much more – provides critically important social, health, economic and environmental benefits to us all. Over the past several months, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been compiling information about the state’s system of federal, state and local recreation assets.
Your input will be used to develop their final plan, which will guide the improvements of outdoor recreation opportunities for everyone across the state of Michigan for the next five years.
And while we’re thinking about outdoor recreation—even though the warmer months are behind us, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors in our winter wonderland. Whether it’s sledding in a local park or cross-country skiing in a state park, Michigan has all you need to enjoy your favorite winter activities. Make sure to check out the DNR website for upcoming events!
