Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Last month, Tropical Storm Julia brought heavy rains, landslides, and destruction to El Salvador. Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for donations! Your generosity made it possible for us to help 688 people through this crisis with food, water, hygiene kits, building supplies, and other necessities as they worked to rebuild for the long term. Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Migrant advocate says it’s about time Title 42 is going away: [link removed] A U.S. judge has vacated Title 42—the order that used the pandemic as an excuse to rapidly expel immigrants. The decision reaffirms that the U.S. must uphold the right to asylum, as required by federal and international law. “Title 42 is a racist policy that has a disproportionate impact on Black and brown migrants, the Biden administration should have moved to get rid of it on the first day in office as president,” says AFSC’s Pedro Rios. Take action to end the death penalty: [link removed] Death sentences do not deter crime. They are also disproportionately handed to people of color. Yet in 2022 alone, there have been at least 16 executions by five states, and more are scheduled by year end. Tell elected officials: It’s time to abolish the death penalty once and for all.
Have you seen our latest issue of Quaker Action magazine?: [link removed] If not, you can now check out the issue online. Read about our work at the U.S.-Mexico border, a big win on divestment, and updates on sustainable food and land rights in Central America.
Immigration comes up over family dinner. How will you respond?: [link removed] Use these tips to help keep your cool and open the door for much-needed dialogue this holiday season. The guide was prepared by Coloradans for Immigrant Rights, a project of AFSC that organizes allies in support of immigrant rights.
Training a new generation of abolitionists: [link removed] In Chicago, young leaders ages 15 to 19 took part in a four-week program to strengthen their organizing and advocacy skills. They also worked on local campaigns to stop youth incarceration, writes AFSC’s Alicia Brown.
Compassion in Action Matching Gift Challenge: [link removed] Thank you to everyone who has joined our largest matching gift opportunity of the year. Our goal is to raise $500,000, and we still have a few more days to go before our Monday deadline. If you are in a position to give and have not yet contributed, join the challenge today.
Be well and take care
