BARBARA LEE BEACON OF HOPE AWARD
SHERIFF-CORONER-ELECT YESENIA SANCHEZ
Yesenia beat a long-time incumbent, becoming one of the first two Latinas to serve as sheriff in California's history! She is committed to leading her office with the utmost integrity, serving the community equitably and inclusively, and making sure the agency ensures safety in the community by investing in it.
LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR
ASSEMBLY MEMBER ALEX LEE
In 2020, Alex became the youngest Asian American legislator ever elected and the first openly bisexual state legislator in California's history! Since then, he has hit the ground running by fighting to ban corporate contributions, tax billionaires, protect low-income renters, and provide healthcare for all. He has cemented himself as a progressive champion, taking no corporate, special interest, real estate, fossil fuel, or police money and relying on an energetic grassroots movement ready for a new generation of leadership.
KICK-ASS YOUTH OF THE YEAR
ALLYSSA VICTORY VILLANUEVA
Allyssa is a trailblazing young Democrat leader from Oakland, an ADEM Delegate, and a civil rights attorney who has worked on issues surrounding policing, worker rights, social justice, youth mentorship, and improving our democracy, including running a historic campaign for Oakland Mayor with an unapologetic platform centering workers and residents!
ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR
LATINE YOUNG DEMOCRATS OF THE EAST BAY
We have been fortunate to partner with LYDEB on the vast majority of our meetings and events this past year and have seen firsthand their passion and dedication in getting young Latines involved in government, preparing and promoting them for elected office, and contributing to the growth and influence of Latine ideals and philosophies within the Democratic Party!
Ruben Hernandez Story (he/him/él)
Communications Director www.ebyd.org
“A lot of people tell you, ‘don’t forget where you are from'. That’s the one thing I haven’t done. I started off with nothing and was a civilian. I grew up in the ranks and I’ve treated people the same way, no matter where I was assigned. That is something I will continue to do as sheriff, treat people with respect regardless of what rank they hold or whatever environment they grew up in.” - Alameda County Sheriff-Coroner-Elect Yesenia Sanchez
