** Congressional Democratic Nominee Bob Christian's Remarks On The Evening Of The Election
------------------------------------------------------------
Progress, they say, is less like an arrow and more like a river: often twisting and turning, we may not always go in the right direction but we can be sure that, ultimately, we will arrive at our goal. Tonight, we find ourselves caught in one of those turns as, three hours ago, the polls are reporting that my opponent, Dr. Rich McCormick, has won.
While the results are disappointing, the decision of the People, we must never forget, is final. As such, I want to make it absolutely clear: I respect and wholeheartedly accept the outcome of this election. Further, I urge all those across the country who, tonight, also find themselves in the same situation, to rapidly and unequivocally follow suit. Our democracy remains too fragile for hesitation.
This is one of those rare situations where words simply aren’t enough to communicate the sheer emotion of the moment. That being said, I’ve prepared a few that I hope begin to scratch the surface: To all those who followed, supported, and worked on this campaign, thank you. To my wife and daughters, thank you. While it will be easy for us to grow weary and disillusioned after the hard work I know you've all poured into this race, we must never forget how far we’ve come.
Nine months ago, this election was considered final by nearly every major political operative and outlet across the country. Following the redrawing of Georgia’s boundaries in 2020, the odds here in District 6 were so bad that no one expected a Democrat to run a campaign here.
But together, we proved that any soil is fertile soil for those who believe in, and are willing to fight for, their freedom. In the face of what they said was possible, we stood up for workers, for the environment, and, of course, for the rights of women everywhere. We fought for progress against the odds and grew a grassroots coalition the likes of which have never been seen here before.
Perhaps above all, we kept those in power where they should always be: in check. By not allowing this seat to go unchallenged, we showed them that injustice will not go unnoticed, that the people of District 6 believe a better future is possible, and that—to quote one of my favorite films—we will not go quietly into the night.
Looking beyond this election, we must keep the pressure on our politicians; keep them on their toes; remind them who it is they work for. Citizenship is a verb, demanding that each of us remain civically active, make our voices heard, and ensure the representation that every American is promised, remains protected. Because while my opponent may have been elected by a Republican majority, on January 3rd he will no longer represent that party — his job, as would have been mine, is to represent the full depth and diversity of this district's will.
Finally, remember that what we’ve lost tonight is an election, not our capacity to enact change; there’s a reason that these come in cycles. Galatians tells us: "let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Let us not lose heart, for there are more cycles to come and more work to do. Never forget these words: change is guaranteed by Nature, but progress is derived from the will of the People.
Godspeed to the Representative-Elect in delivering for the people of this district, and God Bless America.
Thank you all very much.
