Health insurance premiums and healthcare costs keep skyrocketing year after year, leaving many of us wondering why.

The driving force behind this: Secret negotiated rates between insurers and healthcare providers. Simply put: consumers are being left in the dark about prices, which means that providers have no reason NOT to jack them up.

The U.S. Departments of Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services have proposed new rules to correct this. These are the latest of a series of rules designed to deliver price transparency--and a true marketplace--to the healthcare system.

it’s important that the administration hears from you about their new price transparency rules before they close the comment submission period on January 29 at 11:59 p.m. ([link removed])

These new regulations would allow hospitals and other healthcare providers to work with each other, insurance companies, or employers in ways that were prohibited previously, to help create innovative solutions to coordinate patient care and lower healthcare prices.

Patients should know what they are expected to pay right off the bat--not after they get the medical procedure, treatment, or test. Price transparency would allow patients to see the full price, shop around, and plan for care.

The comment submission period closes in 25 days. So there’s not much time left to act.
